Hi, I’m Asra - a psychologist, behaviour support practitioner and mum to a curious and energetic toddler.
People often ask me how I got into this work. The truth is, I didn’t always know I wanted to be a psychologist. But I’ve always known I wanted to help people feel heard. I’ve always been drawn to the stories that others didn’t understand. The kids who acted out. The adults who shut down. The behaviours that made others uncomfortable. I saw the person behind those moments and knew I wanted to support them.
What I do
At One Step Ahead, I support people of all ages and support needs. This includes children with autism and sensory differences, teenagers managing anxiety or school avoidance, and adults navigating trauma, schizophrenia, intellectual disability or OCD.
In my work, I spend time:
Creating Behaviour Support Plans that are practical, respectful and person-centred
Helping parents work through daily challenges like sleep, emotional regulation or boundaries
Writing psychology reports that help advocate for NDIS funding and supports
Collaborating with OTs, speech pathologists, teachers, support coordinators and families
Running workshops focused on trauma-informed care, mental health and support strategies
I believe the heart of this work is helping people feel safe, understood and empowered.
What matters to me
I practise in a way that is flexible, person-led and values-based. My approach focuses on support that is not only clinically sound but also meaningful in everyday life.
Here are the values that shape how I work:
Real connection that goes beyond ticking boxes
Neuroaffirming practice that celebrates differences
Cultural safety and understanding of each person’s lived experience
Behaviour support that looks at the whole person, not just the surface
Building relationships that are collaborative and respectful
Behaviour always communicates something. My role is to listen with care and curiosity.
Outside of work
When I’m not supporting clients or writing reports, I spend most of my time with my toddler who keeps me on my toes. I enjoy long walks outdoors, especially near the water. I love getting creative, whether it’s painting, cooking something new or writing ideas in a notebook. Reading a good book, sipping coffee in the sun or finding a quiet moment to recharge helps me stay grounded.
Final thoughts
I’m really glad you’re here. Whether you're a participant, a family member or a professional looking to connect, I want you to know that support should never feel out of reach or out of touch. It should feel human.
Thanks for being part of the One Step Ahead community.
